The church's position

Betsy Radcliffe's letter is partially true about Paul Ryan, Joe Biden and Catholicism ("Paul Ryan Would Put His Faith Into Action," Oct. 20). Neither supports the official magisterial teaching on life. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that abortion is always intrinsically evil and immoral. In the vice presidential debate Mr. Ryan supported three exceptions to his pro-life position: rape, incest and life of the mother.

While one might agree or disagree with this position, it is not the official teaching of the Catholic Church. This raises, then, the issue of the degree to which Mr. Ryan's (and Mr. Biden's, for that matter) Catholic faith actually informs their politics.

Perhaps what informs their positions may not be as important as their actual positions. Both allow abortion, but not on the basis of their Catholic faith.
