The best weapon

Letter writer Charles Gaefke ("Gun Safety," Jan.25) promotes the gun-worshiper's fantasy that our freedom depends on an armed citizenry. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In the United States, civilian gunmen are destroying our freedom, not preserving it. Gun-toting lunatics violently rob men, women and children of their most fundamental rights -- specifically life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Our best weapon for preserving rights and freedom is not the gun. It is the vote.

That hasn't changed in more than 200 years.
