The best gift

In response to the Dec. 2 Forum column "Tips On Buying Gifts" by Cass R. Sunstein, I, too, have struggled to find the perfect gift for relatives and others who I truly love but haven't often hit the mark. I've come to the conclusion the best gift is the Gift of Not Giving.

Then we can all afford to buy what we actually want and need for ourselves or donate to charities or causes that are important. Not many of us can afford to buy a new set of tires for a brother-in-law; the diamond tiara of a sister's dreams; or make a mortgage payment for anyone else.

By not spending our collective billions on unnecessary and unappreciated gifts, we can all be jolly, solvent, and get what we really want, too! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All!
