Take the train

Brian O'Neill well described the problems with our region's Amtrak service, which can only be made worse by the proposal to cancel The Pennsylvanian across the state ("Losing Amtrak Train Would be Rail Awful," Feb. 7). But he might have tied the loss of our horrendous service to another of his favorite topics, our state representatives in Harrisburg.

While PennDOT's subsidy supports frequent and improved service between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, where elected state officials in the southeast can enjoy convenient train travel to work in Harrisburg -- faster than driving and walking distance to the office -- we here in the southwest pay our state officials to drive their subsidized cars. Maybe we should declare Amtrak Month for our state elected officials in southwestern Pennsylvania. And maybe after one month of traveling to and from Harrisburg by train, more state elected officials will find that the region needs better train service, not no train service.
