Why is the Post-Gazette ignoring the tremendous gains in literacy in the U.S.? Only two months ago, we were in such bad shape that former Pittsburgh mayor Sophie Masloff had "hundreds of friends" who lacked the skills needed to obtain voting identification. Yet, by March 1, everyone in the United States will be able to identify themselves to sign up for Social Security, open a bank account or get to the bank and use an ATM machine. Let's give thanks to the Department of Education and the teachers' unions. What an accomplishment.
