Shedding light on schizophrenia is a help to many

In regard to the Jan. 27 front-page article on schizophrenia ("Mysteries of the Mind: One Man's Journey Into Schizophrenia"), I commend the McHolmes and the Post-Gazette for shedding light on the devastating effects of schizophrenia. The honesty of opening their story gives others, like me, hope.
I, like them, have a son who has been diagnosed with this awful disease. Through his hard work, he is holding a steady job. When we hear of today's heroes, we think of sports stars, celebrities, the rich or powerful, but when I think of heroes, I think of my son. Each day is difficult. With the pain of limitation and restriction a part of his life, his efforts prove to me that the human spirit is all about hope. Hope is the touchstone of recovery.
Unfortunately, there are too few resources and understanding of the illness. Our health system, already broken, provides only fragmented medical treatment. Our medical experts don't appear to have a clue for its cause. Our success in helping others is by shining the light of awareness, education and support.
The willingness of the McHolmes to share their story and the Post-Gazette for publishing the article is a start for greater understanding. For those who suffer, you are not alone and you will be heard.
