She is wrong

I am writing in response to the Forum article "Spend More Time at Work: There Is Such a Thing As Too Much Family Time" by Emily Oster, Jan. 20. Emily Oster, I feel sorry for your children and the children of people like you. If you feel the parent/child relationship boils down to your enjoyment, you're doing it wrong. Judging by the fact that you compare your enjoyment of time with your child to a new espresso maker is frightening.
Raising your child is your other job. Rather than buy things like stickers and standing by and watching them play with them, how about you provide activities like going for a walk, building a blanket fort or visiting a museum? Your child will benefit more from an activity like that and, as a side benefit, your all-important level of enjoyment will certainly go up.
One of your jobs as a parent is to teach them not only things like facts and figures, which seems to be your only reference for child-rearing advice, but also things like morals and manners, which mold them into decent members of society. You are the answer to the question, "What is wrong with today's youth?"
