Schools and salaries

Regarding Matthew Marlin's Feb. 13 letter ("The State's Pension Example Is Far Too Low"), I'd like to take him up on his offer to give $100 to my favorite charity if I can name one district paying less than $90,000.

It should be remembered that the minimum salary, set by the state, for a beginning teacher with a bachelor's degree is only $18,000 per year.

Currently, there are 14 districts that do not have a career rate of $90,000 for those with at least a master's degree and 30 years of experience. The lowest five, with the salaries attached are: Wilkinsburg ($75,570); Duquesne City ($78,909); Cornell ($80,000); Sto-Rox ($80,180); and Highlands ($83,185). The other school districts below $90,000 are: Riverview, Shaler, South Allegheny, Clairton, Elizabeth Forward; Mc-Keesport; Northgate, Penn Hills and Allegheny Valley.

Since I have named 14 districts in Allegheny County, I would look forward to his donations of $100 for each district ($1,400).

My favorite charities are the Westmoreland County Food Bank and/or the KDKA Turkey Fund. I expect that he will send the money forthwith. He can verify any of these numbers by simply calling the business office of any of the districts listed.
