Santa's magic

Jan. 5 found me reading Jerome A. Schaffer's obituary in the Post-Gazette. Schaffer had spent some years being a department store Santa in Pittsburgh, and it became apparent to me that a missing piece of Schneider family Christmas lore had been discovered.

Our family had moved into our new home in Forest Hills on Dec. 8, 1978. Our daughter Shelby was 4 years old at the time. As was our custom, we traveled to Kaufmann's Magic Christmas Kingdom Downtown to visit Santa. She was becoming increasingly concerned that Santa be able to find her new home.

Approaching Santa's throne, Shelby settled on his knee and I proceeded to tell him that we had just moved. Santa looked at me and then asked Shelby where she lived. In her soft little voice she told him that she lived at 321 Castlegate Road in Forest Hills. Santa smiled and said, "Oh. Shelby, don't worry. My reindeer know exactly where that is. Why, we'll just fly over Ardmore Boulevard to Bevington Road and then straight up Castlegate until we find your chimney on the roof at 321." Shelby was certainly satisfied with Santa's GPS but her parents were absolutely astounded! It is a Christmas vignette that we share annually with friends and family.
