Recognize diversity

The population of Allegheny County is becoming more diverse annually with the legal immigration of Latinos, Muslims, Europeans, Chinese, Japanese, etc., yet our public holiday schedule reflects an image of a purely WASP population. Surely Allegheny County can afford to celebrate holidays important to the soon-to-be majority of the population as well as those important to the original immigrant population.

Why should we have to wait until we have a Hispanic/Muslim/other mayor or chief executive before we celebrate our diversity? Now is the time to embrace that diversity and welcome the next generations of our community. Also, out of respect for the original and displaced Allegheny County community, we should observe a county holiday for the Native American community to be selected by the native community representatives.
