Regarding "Stand Up for Beliefs" (Oct. 4 letters): While I feel everyone should stand up for their beliefs, it was only in 1954 while I was in grade school that "under God" was added to our Pledge of Allegiance. In her letter, Janet Lukac stated it was one of the founding principles of our nation; it was not.

That phrase was added in the Eisenhower administration as we were fighting the so-called godless Soviets. I say the pledge with that addition as I have since being in grade school, but our founding principle was division of church and state.

My beliefs are strong and that is my strength.
