Concerning Margie Swanson's "Animal Tales" piece ("Feral Cat Impresses With Strong Strides for Kittens, Freedom," June 22): After many years of having no feral cats testing positive for rabies, the statistics are again beginning to climb. This is because feral cats and raccoons share the same watering spots, and rabies is transmitted through saliva.

I had hoped the Allegheny County Health Department would have mentioned this after a third rabid raccoon in the county this year was found in Lawrenceville. I would never let anyone I love approach an unknown cat, and I do not support the releasing of cats into the woods -- an act of cruelty I believe worse than euthanasia.
