Re: armed teachers

I am not a gun owner nor do I want to own a gun. However, I worked at a school as a librarian. Guns for teachers is simply not a practical solution. Let's assume a gunman enters a school and begins shooting. The teacher would need to get the students to safety, find the key to unlock the drawer or cabinet where the gun would be stored, retrieve the gun, turn the safety off, possibly load the gun, aim and shoot. Do this while being a bundle of nerves knowing that you are responsible for your students' lives.
Another thought: Who would foot the expense of guns, ammunition and gun safety and handling lessons? The state cannot keep up the funding for the 3 R's let alone this. Wearing a shoulder pistol isn't the answer either especially in schools for older students. The teacher could be easily overpowered and the gun would then be in the hands of the student.
I would not impose on anyone's right to own a gun, but I do think stricter laws are in order. We change driving laws for our safety, so why not this? I don't know what the solution is, but I pray we find one soon.
