Thank you to the Pittsburgh Pirates for the exciting ride this summer. Yes, I'm disappointed, but even though the Pirates suffered a losing season, everyone else was a winner.
How many times did the Pirates fill PNC Park? How much money did the vendors inside and outside the park make? All items with Pirates logos on them sold in record amounts.
I noticed that even when the Pirates were on their winning streaks, all stories about them seemed to have a narrow column along the side of the Sports section. Most stories and photos were on the third or fourth page. The Steelers always made the front page and they were not even playing yet! Then we hit our 20th losing season and that's front-page news with a photo of Andrew McCutchen missing a catch.
Why wasn't he on the front page when he made some spectacular catches? He made a lot of those. He didn't lose the game last Sunday. Joel Hanrahan did. That was like rubbing salt in the wound.
I love the Pirates, and they are all winners in my book.
