Pirates' free fall

I wash my hands of the Pirates forever. This year's collapse in many ways is worse than last season's debacle. The hottest team in baseball at the All-Star break is now shoulder to shoulder with the Astros' farm team. It's hard to imagine that there was once hope of winning the division.

When the Reds took command of first place, the next hope was for a wildcard place. The Pirates squashed that dream in short order. At one point the general consensus was finishing below .500 was inconceivable, but it's more of a sure bet now.

This season's free fall is an embarrassment for the entire organization. We'll see if all the ballyhoo about accountability during spring training was serious or another line of gobbledygook to appease the hopeful fans.
