Papal challenge

There has been much made of how deeply Pope Francis loves the poor and identifies with their suffering. I question whether all this love translates into improving the lives of those living at the lowest rungs of society.

History shows that the most effective means of eradicating poverty is to empower women and, of course, this entails safe and affordable access to birth control. Whether the new pope and the Catholic Church will change their stance on this issue seems unlikely. Without the freedom to determine the size of their families, all the love in the world won't alter the condition of the "least of our brethren."
