Over-the-top taxes

I'm sure I'm not the only one who just received his or her 2013 tax bill in the mail from Allegheny County and was angered. My taxes increased by almost 60 percent.

I jumped through the hoops and appealed my reassessment, and I was basically told I wasted my time going there because the decision had already been made. I was told that I should not worry about my taxes going up quickly as there is a clause in the tax code that limits the increase to 5 percent. I later found out that this pertains to municipalities receiving a windfall of additional tax revenue the year after property reassessments.

I still own property back in the Pittsburgh area, but I had to move to Mechanicsburg for employment 25 years ago. Am I the only one who was surprised by the increase? Does anyone know the "excuse" they will use to justify a 60 percent increase?
