Only people care

Thank you, Fred Spoerl, for your well-written Jan. 3 letter, "His Ineffective God." I also have no patience with religious Neanderthals who blame every natural or man-made tragedy on our lack of worship for any god including (but not limited to) Jesus, Allah or Yahweh. There have been hundreds of gods throughout human history that were thought to be worthy of human worship and they all are dead. That has happened because as we evolve we realize that these cosmic fairies don't exist and deserve no mind when disaster occurs.

Only people care, and only people will comfort and get us through even the unspeakable events, like the Newtown, Conn., shootings. We as a people will demand the removal of assault weapons over the despicable objections of the National Rifle Association. And more and more of us will realize that the natural world doesn't give a twit whether we live or die and there are no imaginary gods who care about us.

Let me finish with the closing of a 2007 speech given by the novelist Ian McEwan at Stanford University that I feel applies to Newtown: "The believers should know in their hearts by now that, even if they are right and there actually is a benign and watchful personal God, he is, as all the daily tragedies, all the dead children attest, a reluctant intervener. The rest of us, in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, know that it is highly improbable that there is anyone up there at all."

Let us care for and comfort everyone without the belief in some being who'll punish or reward us in another life. This is all we have, and it is enough.
