Judging from the letters appearing on your editorial page, the National Rifle Association would have been better advised to lie low and keep quiet after the Newtown, Conn., school massacre. Instead its executive vice president made a public statement. And what a statement! If we did not before view the NRA as a club for mindless Second Amendment fanatics we should now.
According to Wayne LaPierre, what every school needs is a guard with a gun, as if a gun is equal to an assault weapon or as if an attacker would not eliminate a guard first and then go on to the classrooms.
But let's not ask for logic from the gun lobby. The NRA's executive vice president only made it clearer that this organization could not care less about dead children and cares more about securing its hold over Congress and state legislators.
