Not a sinful vote

In a recent visit to your city, I read a letter to the editor in which a priest equated voting to sinning ("Voting and Sin," Nov. 21). He said, "We may exchange the word 'vote' for 'sin' " and claimed that a person who voted with a clear conscience can say that he sinned with a clear conscience if he voted for President Barack Obama.

Although he made this judgment (which Jesus told us never to do) against those who voted for Mr. Obama, his logic also means those who voted for Mr. Romney also sinned. Actually his logic leads to saying that anyone who votes sins, that a democratic society is sinful.

What can one expect from a hierarchical member of a feudal society, a society which has princes who rule their diocese and is governed by an absolute ruler who claims to be infallible in his moral judgments?

This is America. When I vote with a clear conscience, only Jesus can judge me.
