My take on poem

I am sorry that letter writer Robert Park ("Racist, Sexist Poem," Feb. 16) was offended by a recent poem in the PG. I had a completely different interpretation -- I believe the narrator in Walt Peterson's poem "Learn to Speak Chinese" (Feb. 9) was sadly deluded. He saw a relationship with the waitress that wasn't there and would never be there -- a fact that became clear to everyone except the narrator. The description of the waitress was part of the narrator's misguided impression, which added to the ultimate comeuppance in the last stanza.

Irony is one of the artist's tools. In many ways, it's what makes us human: an ability to recognize when we are blind to our own faults -- and, alas, always too late.
