Regarding "8 Apartments, Clothing Store Destroyed by Fire in Ambridge" (Sept. 15): Thank you for the article about the fire at this wonderful store, Charles Men's Store, but there is some history that I'd like to add.
My father, Charles Ehrenwerth, founded this business in the mid-1940s. The original location was 639 Merchant St., between Merrill's (music and cards) and the legendary Isaly's (home of the skyscraper ice cream cone).
My mother, Cel, and my sister, Sandy Schwartz, worked there with my Uncle Ben, Aunt Bea and their son, David Ehrenwerth, formerly of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart and now with President Obama's General Services Administration. We loved working together and cherish memories of our loyal customers.
Later the business was sold to the DiClemente family, who carried on the rich tradition of outfitting all sizes.
Though Charles died in 1979, his spirit is captured by his namesake, great-grandson Charles "Charlie" Block.
We all appreciate the warmth your paper expressed about our family business's demise.
