Greg Gensheimer appears to have done a lot of commendable work putting together his letter "Chase the Truth," published on Jan.12. Unfortunately, in discussing the chemical composition of fracking fluid, he omitted one final bit of arithmetic.
He identifies a chemical in fracking fluid used in one well that can be a reproductive toxin to humans at a level as low as 10 parts per million. And he finds that the chemical was present as 0.00063 percent of the fluid. One percent of a million is 10,000. Multiply 0.00063 by 10,000 (you move the decimal point four places to the right) and the result is 6.3. The fluid contains 6.3 parts per million of the chemical.
If you believe that 6.3 is equal to or greater than 10, you are eligible for membership in the Sierra Club.
