Life transmission

In his essay "It's Not a Gay Thing" (Oct. 7 Forum), minister Ron Pedersen Jr. called for understanding not argumentation. In that spirit I call his attention to Genesis as instruction on the purpose of marriage. Because "it is not good for man to be alone" God created Eve, a woman, and then called for them to "be fruitful and multiply." There you have it -- male and female. He created them to come together and bring about future generations. This generation may be zero population minded, but God seemed to be thinking of the future.
If you are not a "Bible person" turn your attention to nature. Why men and women? To assure a continuity of humankind. Same-sex unions cannot fulfill that purpose. They cannot, in and of themselves, by their nature, be generative
If you say this is just philosophy, try biology. Form follows function. Eyes see, ears hear. Men and women are different in their reproductive systems precisely because each is needed to produce offspring.
Man-man, woman-woman may love and cherish, but their coming together cannot fulfill a basic purpose of marriage, the transmission of life. Same-sex marriage is a contradiction in terms. Pressure to subvert our understanding of marriage and to change its definition to suit an unintended purpose must be resisted.
