Steelers were a bigger story than these shootings?
I wonder how the families and friends of the women killed and injured in the LA Fitness shootings in Collier felt when they saw your "2009 Stories of the Year" rankings (Jan. 1).
Violence against women is a far more important issue than any sporting event, including the Super Bowl. Shame on us if we genuinely believe otherwise.

Decade 'dumbing'
Why do you go along with the general "dumbing down" concept that 2009 was the last year of the first decade of the 21st century? Just as 2000 was the last year of the 20th century, 2010 is the last year of the first decade of this century. We begin counting at one, not zero. Figure it out and follow it through.
Part of a newspaper's job is to educate -- just because most people think something is true does not make it so.

This was a keeper
Thank you so much for the column by Donna Lund on New Year's Day ("A Winter's Tale: As We Grow Older, Winter Grows Sweeter"). It is so refreshing to have a positive focus on some simple "senior pleasures."
I cut it out to reread whenever and sent it to several other folks.
We also thoroughly enjoy the weekly Random Acts of Kindness section and appreciate your recognition that readers like these types of inclusions in the newspaper.

Profits and losses
Dr. Abe W. Friedman ("Carnations Before a Closing," Dec. 30 Perspectives) describes beautifully the type of care that is lost when the plug is pulled on a hospital where "the majority of the employees either live in the community or close by and know the patients and their families and their problems."
For 25 years, I have visited relatives in Braddock hospital and witnessed how stress and pain are reduced when patients are cared for by people who are part of their community. Caregivers ask patients about family, tease about old times. The patients feel at home. We who visit are reassured by familiar faces -- faces we can trust because we know an aunt or grandmother or went to school with a brother.
