Lack of respect

Regardless of one's personal opinion of Arlen Specter's political record, the Post-Gazette's coverage of the senator's passing is very disappointing. The photo of Specter on the front page of the October 15 edition is unflattering, exploiting his age and illness, as if the paper wanted to present the late senator as Emperor Palpatine from "Star Wars." And the first adjective used to describe him? "Crafty" in bold lettering. How disrespectful. Why not "resourceful" or "pragmatic," evenhanded adjectives?

It is sad that a paper of the Post-Gazette's stature has sunk to such a depth in its remembrance of a public servant who showed the nation that it is possible be a true moderate and maintain political longevity at one and the same time.
