I am writing in response to the Dec. 26 editorial "NRA Nonsense," in which you declare that the National Rifle Association's proposal to place armed police in schools is "nonsense." The PG further declares the NRA and its executive vice president, Wayne LaPierre, to be irresponsible and out of touch. Instead of armed guards the PG proposes tougher gun legislation as the solution to deranged killers who target defenseless children.

Kids are back in class after the winter break. How long will it take to pass new laws that will restrict access to semi-automatic weapons, as if no other type of weapon could be used in their place? How long will it take to round up the millions of weapons you don't like that are already in circulation? Months? Years? Never?

We can debate gun control until we are all blue in the face, but the bottom line is that the only way to protect a public school right now is with armed security. School security at present is a joke. The nice lady manning the front door will be the first casualty. The brave principal who tries to intervene will be next. Some schools in our area have already recognized this and taken action to protect their kids and should be applauded.

There are killers among us right now. They won't be stopped by new gun laws that may or may not ever get passed or enforced. We need to protect our schools now. How will focusing on new gun laws keep my kid safe in school? An armed cop is the only answer.

We all know the PG editors don't like the NRA and Wayne LaPierre. There is no need to bash them further. When someone you disagree with comes up with a good idea you should give them credit, regardless of personal or political feelings. You accuse the NRA of exploiting the Newtown tragedy for its political agenda, but I think it is the other way around.
