Holiday less bright

When I read Virginia Leckie's Sept. 12 letter in response to Rich Fitzgerald's decision to cancel the holiday light display at Hartwood Acres ("County Executive Makes a 'Hartless' Decision"), my first reaction was to question whether the event was a necessary function of government and therefore taxpayer dollars. I'd say it probably isn't. Then I reread the original news article and saw that it was Mr. Fitzgerald's failure to obtain corporate sponsorship that led him to cancel Christmas.

While Mr. Fitzgerald has time to plot around property taxes, drink taxes and the Regional Asset District tax, there's no room at the inn for working on a private-public partnership to save a quality-of-life county amenity.

So, no, Virginia, in the county executive's world there is no Santa Claus, just another big lump of coal from Mr. Fitzgerald.
