Higher ed dispute

Recently, the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculty -- the union representing teachers and coaches at the 14 state-owned universities -- requested binding arbitration in our contract dispute. Contract negotiations have dragged out for two years, with the state system management unwilling to offer APSCUF the same considerations given to other workers at the state schools, while demanding increases in temporary faculty workloads, increases in class sizes and increases in online courses.
Because the state system has been unresponsive to APSCUF's offers of compromise, the dispute should be handed over to a neutral third party who can resolve the conflict. I hope that the state system is willing to let an unbiased mediator come up with a fair resolution to this dispute.
Attracting and retaining high-quality faculty, and giving them the tools they need to give personal attention to students, is what makes Pennsylvania's state universities one of the best values in higher education in the country.
