Her vegan agenda

In her Feb. 15 Perspectives article "No Meat for Two Weeks? In This Respect Budget Sequestration Would Be Good for Us," Susan Levin, director of nutrition education with the vegan group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, needs to carefully look at the name of the group she works for and try to understand what the words "responsible medicine" really mean.
Ms. Levin speaks "on behalf of dietitians" to eradicate meat from our diet because it is "causing our nation's worst health problems." Really? I'll bet the guy who routinely orders chili-cheese fries has a significantly higher chance of major health problems than the guy eating a balanced meal with meat in it. What about the person who pounds chips and sugary soda in front of the TV all day while getting only enough exercise to make it to the dinner table and back?
Ms. Levin blames a meat-heavy diet with all sorts of horrible diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cancer. A diet heavily canted toward any one food group will have its own list of increased risk factors: This is not news. As a vegan, she is obviously obsessed toward her culinary intake. Running around like Chicken Little touting biased views on meat is irresponsible. We could easily re-write her article and substitute the words "meat" and link corresponding "health problems" for a variety of food groups.
All Ms. Levin's article does is wave her vegan agenda with tired arms while trying to create a frenzy. Those of us who eat well-balanced diets see through her rhetoric and refuse to blame a single dietary choice as the catalyst that will destroy civilization. That destruction will likely come at the hands of pseudo-authorities like Ms. Levin leading us off the cliff of hyperbole.
