Hawkish illusion

It would be easy to dismiss Charles Krauthammer's Sept. 22 column ("The Collapse of the Cairo Doctrine Shows Foreign Policy in Tatters") as just another of his diatribes against President Barack Obama and not worth disputing. What does trouble me is the underlying idea -- illusion really -- that the United States can and should be in control of events in other nations, an illusion promoted by the essential hawk.

Note that Mr. Krauthammer does not specify exactly what policy decisions should have been made that would have prevented all the anti-American events he enumerated. My guess is that military resolve (threats, intervention) is his only idea.

Though his foreign policy is not the utter failure claimed by Mr. Krauthammer, President Obama has made mistakes. But replace him with Mitt Romney? Seriously?
