Golden bargains

With all the advertising redundancy surrounding the Black Friday phenomenon, I begin to wonder if the proximity of the two, Friday and black, isn't a hangover from Halloween. That these events come so close together leaves an eerie ringing in my head that conjures up a bad omen.

It's sometimes hard to remember that the black in a Friday connotation means a good thing for retailers. It's a one-sided explanation when we look at black being a profit margin for doing business on a grand scale.

Maybe it's time to add a little color to the other side of the equation, namely the buyers. They are the ones who reap the golden bargains. Year after year we hear retailers hype the season, but profit is not the only reward. Consumers are known to camp out for days in front of stores just so they can be the first to cash in on the values offered.

Since this is a "good as gold" reward for the shopper, let's encompass a well-known color combination currently celebrated in the Tri-State area. Let's begin calling that infamous day the Black & Gold Friday. Let's make it a truly festive day to compliment the approaching season. Merry Christmas!
