Extend the march

A suggestion for those covered in the news story "New Leaders Hope to Revitalize the Annual March for Life" (Jan. 21): Infuse the march with new life by expanding its single focus on unborn lives. Surely it's time -- and timely, given Newtown -- to include gun control and death penalty causes under the pro-life banner.

Aren't the lives of those already born as valuable as those still in utero? Marching on behalf of the living as well as the unborn would also convey compassion for countless mourners who grieve when people they love are mowed down by gunfire or whose lives are ended by a barbaric electric chair.

The esteemed Cardinal Joseph Bernardin often spoke of the "seamless garment of life." Stretching that garment to cover the already born would reinvigorate the march, giving it that "real shot in the arm" Helen Cindrich, director of People Concerned for the Unborn Child, believes it needs.
