Objectivity from newspapers has long been dead. The Wall Street Journal comes from a conservative point of view, as the Post-Gazette, like the New York Times, comes from a very liberal one. So it's no surprise that the Jan. 20 editorial "Self-Inflicted Wound" criticizing the National Rifle Association ad is critical. What is a suprise, even for the PG, is how astonishingly inaccurate (by purpose or by incompetence) it is.
The NRA's popularity has not changed nationally (41 percent approval) in years. Its membership has increased by 250,000 in the last three weeks. Most troubling is the hyperbole conjuring up "Goebbels" while it was the Nazis, Stalin and Mao who made it a priority to confiscate guns. Finally, it is a PG pipe dream without a basis in reality that the influence of the NRA is abating. Ask Harry Reid if this is so.
