All the yammering about putting armed guards in schools, revising mental health commitment laws and training teachers to cope with grieving children comes after the fact.
What is missing in this conversation is a greater emphasis on the need for early intervention to identify at-risk children at the preschool and kindergarten level. This must be paired with the use of constructive interventions to help the child develop without the need to resort to inappropriate and unacceptable behaviors.
Caretakers of children, whether they be parents, teachers or other community leaders, should not hesitate to speak out and offer assistance to those youngsters who are struggling.
Prevention makes far more sense as a solution than locking the door after the horse is gone.
