A recent letter writer ("Bikes and Bridges," Sept. 20) wonders how she is supposed to safely pass a bicyclist on a narrow bridge if cars are coming in the opposite direction and she can't therefore safely pass the bicyclist.
The answer is simple. You are not supposed to pass under those circumstances. You are supposed to drive behind the bicyclist until it's safe to pass, and if it never is, well, too bad.
Bicyclists are well-advised under such circumstances not to stay to the right of the lane they are in, but to occupy the center of the lane so that drivers do not pass too close to them and risk hitting them.
Is this frustrating to drivers? Yes. But it is necessary for everyone's safety.
