The Nov. 21 photo featuring a young boy carefully placing his family's groceries into a donated tote bag at the Max Starks' Turkey Distribution was an uplifting contrast to the dire news about food bank funding.
Donating food in a tote bag is a simple way to add one more item to your donation -- the bag itself -- which can be packed and distributed to the region's food pantries along with the more than 22,000 bags donated thus far. Each bag makes it possible to access more food items, reduces dependency on disposable bags and frees up valuable money to be spent on food rather than bags. It is a source of dignity and practicality.
The simple beauty of this donation is that it doesn't require spending money -- a gently used bag is equally useful as a new item. Most of us have a bag somewhere we aren't using -- a gift, a "freebie" or simply one that doesn't suit our needs. The Pittsburgh Tote Bag Project collects, sorts and distributes totes, backpacks and more through our partners such as Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
I'm grateful that the Max Starks' "Turkey Team" embraced the concept as part of their support of our neighbors and humbled that our work with the Food Bank continues to generates donation from all corners of the region and beyond.
