Cyber school competition is good for every district

I am writing in response to the recent article "Pittsburgh Public Schools Mulls Online Education" (June 13). I do agree with the district's chief academic officer, Jerri Lynn Lippert: Schools need to be competitive. Choice in education is very good and it breeds competition. Competition in education makes every school step up and provide a quality education. Parents want their children to have the best education possible.
For my grandchildren, it's through a public cyber charter school. School districts should stop trying to close our schools and embrace competition. While competition is good, providing a quality education should be the goal of every district. Based on statements in this article, it seems the Pittsburgh school district is more concerned about the dollars than the students. Our schools should not be used as a scapegoat for a district's budget woes. The amount spent on public cyber schools is less than 1 percent of the entire education budget.
Like my grandchildren, there are more than 40,000 students across the state who are benefiting from the quality education they provide. Instead of blaming our schools for budget shortfalls, the districts need to look at where they can do better and compete for students.
