Core values

I was disappointed to learn of Jim Roddey's decision to use language disparaging to the mentally disabled at a recent GOP event ("GOP Leader Sorry for 'Retarded' Remark," Aug. 9). Mr. Roddey serves on the board of visitors at Pitt's Graduate School of Public Health. The role of the board is to help the school to "demonstrate its accountability to external constituencies" by "providing an opportunity to communicate to a broader audience."
As a proud alumnus of the GSPH, it is pretty clear that Mr. Roddey is a hindrance to the goals of the board. The school's own values statement claims that "social justice" is a core value of its "inclusive and respectful environment." Mr. Roddey does not deserve to be a part of shaping the future of that environment.
