Regarding the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which was aired on EWTN Tuesday, and your article ("Bishops Fail to Agree on Economy But Push Dorothy Day Sainthood," Nov. 14): Although the bishops disagreed on a message on the economy which they said ignored the causes of poverty, the manner in which the bishops declined to vote was a model of politeness.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York chaired the conference with his usual charisma and good humor, forever thanking and praising the comments put forth by the bishops, whether he agreed with them or not.
This is civility at its best. This is acknowledging the right of every man to speak his mind, whether you agree with it or not. This is a dignified way of conducting a voting.
Cardinal Dolan, I believe, will be the next pope. Such adherence to justice in his treatment of all men, friends and foes is a trait that is close to the heart of God. The world needs such men, such a show of justice, such a show of charity and tolerance.
