The government of Canada is secretly considering its next steps today as Pittsburgh has boldly continued its unauthorized acquisition of iconic Canadian assets, further extending its tentacles north beyond the Allegheny Mountains and across the international border into Canada.
From Rick Kehoe to Mario Lemieux to Sidney Crosby (and friends) on the Penguins, to Shaun Suisham joining the Steelers and now Russell Martin quickly following the departure of Erik Bedard onto the Pirates roster, clearly the steel town is sending a cryptic message to Canadians about its long-term designs: Is Pittsburgh seeking special status in their country? Free hunting for its residents in the fall? Free health care while traveling north of the border? Tax-free Molson Canadian and Labatt Blue? Or maybe a maple syrup pipeline as a stimulus program in exchange for Pennsylvania having supported Barack Obama?
There's something Canadian in the air in Pittsburgh. Maybe Justin Bieber, Celine Dion or Nickelback are being wooed to make tour stops in Pennsylvania. I'm just sad that Canadians no longer can visit The Igloo and feel some of the creature comforts of home when traveling to the three-rivers city. For "Canadians in Pittsburgh" on Facebook, it's a happy day.
