Businesses, look for other insurance options

Regarding "Want Choice? UPMC Should Renew Its Contract With Highmark" (March 4): This Post-Gazette editorial suggests that Pittsburgh area businesses need to decide who will be their medical insurance carrier and that the choices are UPMC or Highmark (soon to affiliate with West Penn Allegheny Health System). The decision will need to be made by employers by the end of 2014. Currently, either decision will provide employees with only half of the medical choices that will be available.
My employer no longer has a large Pittsburgh presence. Our corporate headquarters is in Arizona. We have offices throughout the country. Some sharp pencil at our company decided to shop around and found good coverage for all of us at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of North Carolina. Our coverage is welcome at all the medical providers in the Pittsburgh area.
I'm not sure what it takes to establish a company presence in another region, but maybe local businesses should shop around and see if a medical carrier at one of their branches has a better deal than what is being offered by the local folks. Or maybe the best deal is somewhere there is no presence by your company. That gives you until the end of 2014 to establish that presence.
The Post-Gazette would never make a good Monty Hall. It never told you that there is a "door No. 3."
