Budget cuts shouldn't target our gifted city students

My daughter and son are currently enrolled in the Pittsburgh Public Schools' Gifted Center, while also enrolled at a local private school. Next year, my daughter will be attending a Pittsburgh public school for sixth grade, while my son will continue at his current private school for fourth grade. Pittsburgh Public Schools has recently announced that, due to budget pressures, it will likely not allow students enrolled in private or parochial schools to attend the Pittsburgh Gifted Center in the 2012-13 school year.
Like many parents of gifted children living in the city of Pittsburgh and attending private or parochial schools as well as the Pittsburgh Gifted Center, I am disappointed to hear that Pittsburgh Public Schools is likely to expel my son from the PPS gifted program in the 2012-2013 school year.
I do not understand why PPS has elected to achieve part of its budget reductions by expelling a whole group of children (who live in the city of Pittsburgh, and whose parents pay taxes to the Pittsburgh school district) from its gifted program, while other children not in that group will be allowed to participate in the gifted program. Surely there are other ways to reduce costs at the Pittsburgh Gifted Center.
