Bikes and bridges

Please tell me if there are any rules for bikes riding on bridges. We recently had an experience where the man was riding next to us on the bridge. Fortunately, there was no car on our left so we could allow enough room for the designated amount of space next to the rider. With no car on our left, we allowed the bike to travel unharmed. If there had been a car on our left, an accident might have happened.
