In Michael Kazin's Sept. 9 Forum article "What's So Great About Family Men?" his last line states: "Perhaps we will have to wait for the first unmarried president -- straight or gay, male or female -- to burst the sentimental bubble."

Has Mr. Kazin forgotten that the United States has had an unmarried president? In 1856, James Buchanan Jr. from Pennsylvania, a lifelong bachelor, was nominated and served from 1857 to 1861.
