Armed security

While reading the Post-Gazette article "DA Urges Tightening Security at Western Psych" (Oct. 3), I became puzzled by the mentioning of armed security possibly being used at metal detectors. There is no other option when it comes to securing a building and preventing armed individuals from entering than to man the metal detectors with armed personnel.

The metal detectors at the City-County Building, Family Court and the Allegheny County Courthouse buildings are all monitored by unarmed security. This is creating a false sense of security.

A deranged person such as John Shick would not be deterred from entering such a building. Disarming police officers who enter the Allegheny County Courthouse may be viewed as a critical mistake someday if an armed person on a psychotic mission decides to carry out that evil act at the courthouse. To properly secure these buildings, schools, etc., the only option is armed personnel monitoring the metal detectors. It's hard to stop an armed predator when you are unarmed.
