America as Detroit?

It's commendable that the PG would like to share conservative viewpoints on its opinion pages. However, printing the clownish, uninformed "perspectives" of Jack Kelly adds nothing to political discourse except to further enrage low-information conservative readers of the PG.

There have been so many remedial-level articles by Mr. Kelly over the years that it's hard to pick just one, but this recent column comparing how Detroit's ills are a good look into the future at what America will look like under President Barack Obama's agenda ("Look to Detroit," March 10) is (insert stream of adjectives for "idiotic" here).

Detroit has many problems, perhaps most greatly its single-party dominance and corruption at the local level, but to say that Detroit is what America would look like under Mr. Obama's agenda without naming a single specific policy, idea or platform that the president is endorsing is the height of intellectual laziness. He talks about liberals and prefers to make sweeping, uninformed generalizations instead of producing real journalism.

If you want to have intelligent, well-informed conservative perspectives, I suggest you dump Mr. Kelly in favor of syndicated columns from Ramesh Ponnuru, David Frum, Michael Lind or S.E. Cupp. Or at least have Tony Norman write an article about how under several decades of Republican governorship, Mississippi is in the bottom three and mostly last among states in education, median family income, unemployment, poverty, obesity and child death rate. Then Mr. Norman can posit that under Mitt Romney, America would be a dumb, poor, fat, jobless nation that is killing its own children. Oh, right, Tony Norman would never do that.
