A fond farewell for a columnist and an editor

It was doubly dispiriting to read in the Feb. 16 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that, after 12 years, Peter McKay is terminating his weekly "Homemaking" column, and Mary Leonard, the P-G's deputy managing editor, has retired.
Curmudgeonly Mr. McKay never failed to amuse me with his colorful tales about family dilemmas and smelly dogs. I'll miss the belly laughs he generated with his keen observational skills and fine prose. At least I'll still have the privilege of being able to read his wife's (food writer Gretchen McKay) many fine and "yummy" articles in the Post-Gazette.
I won't pretend to know what a deputy managing editor does, but I will always be grateful for the graciousness Ms. Leonard displayed when I, and a handful of other "Reg-ulators," toured the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette building as guests of P-G columnist Reg Henry several years ago. She took time away from her busy schedule to inform and accommodate our small assemblage. She made a great afternoon memorable. No wonder Mary Leonard helped usher the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette into the digital age.
Godspeed and best wishes to Mr. McKay and Ms. Leonard.
