A double whammy

Shortly after we Pittsburghers learned that it will cost over $500 million to educate about 25,000 students in our public schools (almost $21,000 per student per year), there's more good news! Our property assessments are far larger than those in other parts of the county ("Pittsburgh Properties Reassessed Higher Than the Suburbs," Dec. 22).
Tuition and room and board at the University of Pittsburgh, per year, is about the same as teaching Little Johnny to read and write. It makes no sense to me, even though the Board of Education claims to have instituted extreme belt-tightening measures.
So, when the city fathers lament "suburban flight," they need look no further than the policies that govern the operation of city services. Call it what you will. I call it a "double whammy."
