Welcome, delegates: One Young World comes to an old town remade

After its debut in London and a sophomore appearance in Zurich, the third One Young World summit opens today in Pittsburgh, with 1,500 delegates, all under 30, from around the world.
Their mission is simple: brainstorm solutions to the world's thorniest problems and return home with practical ideas to be used in their countries. These writers, artists, activists, entrepreneurs and budding politicians will also network and establish relationships that will come in handy when they step into positions of leadership.
Delegates will receive guidance from former President Bill Clinton, former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, Sir Bob Geldof and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, who will be here for the multiday event.
Pittsburgh defeated an impressive field of cities to win the right to host, and the sessions will take place at venues that show the city at its best, from Heinz Hall and a riverboat to Phipps Conservatory and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The delegates also will have an opportunity to meet locals in their homes.
Regional high school students involved in the Youth Media Advocacy Project, a collaboration between Carlow University and Pittsburgh Student Voices, will interview delegates about their experiences (with profiles, tweets and blog posts available on the Post-Gazette's website).
The summit is another feather in Pittsburgh's ever-expanding cap of accolades and will give the city more exposure to Millennials around the world. Let's hope the ol' town shows the young visitors its new energy.
